just thought i should do a post myself since i'd wanted a movie page so much. hard to find movies to talk about right now (at least for me, i'm more of a summer movie guy, i suppose...although i don't like the brainless popcorn stuff either) i just know that come oscar season, it's all about lawyers and the middle east these days... this movie (stardust, that is) didn't do all too hot, but i thought it was pretty entertaining. it comes out on dvd sometime in december. i'd say it's worth it just to see de niro like you've never seen him before.

30 Days of Night got awful reviews, but even I thought it was kind of a neat premise for a vampire movie. Didnt see it b/c of the bad reviews though....
We saw Into The Wild, which is good but not great, a bit long for sure... Eddie Vedder soundtrack though boyyy!!! look out John Williams...
I'll prob. see Michael Clayton, if only for no other reason that if you take the "ton" away from it, you get steves brother. We Own The Night probably see too.
Beowulf looks strangely like one of those 4D rides at Busch Gardens.... only without the vibrating seats.

30 Days of Night was definitely a better than average vampire premise and not a bad flick...definitely pure popcorn...won't buy it...kinda soulless but some decent atmosphere and kinda an interesting ending. Definitely not my favorite type of vampire though. And by this I mean that I like the ones who hide among us, not the straight-up monster variety. But I do like the super-strength and speed, etc. they had.
You and Colleen might want to check it out though. Not for entertainment value, mind you, but to take notes on what to do when the night comes up there.
Never got around to Michael Clayton or We Own the Night either. Can't say I'm interested in Beowulf at this point. Only because I don't believe anything will be able to top Jeremy's version. I mean seriously folks. Why mess with a classic?

Nosferatu has to be the creepiest vampire. The one from that 30's silent movie.
I saw there was a flick they made a couple years ago which was based on a rumor that the actor who played Ol' Nosfer was a real life vampire. Always wanted to check that out.

The trailer for this movie called Cloverfield intrigued me. I looked it up and apparently the monster is being kept a big secret. I found this video on youtube where this guy posted this picture... Looks like a pretty well made mock up of some humongous whale thing. Any thoughts on this possibly being it?

yeah the vampire movie you're talking about there is called shadow of the vampire and it's got willem dafoe in it as the nosferatu creature...never saw it but it definitely intrigued me...i'm not sure that it was played up the way i think i'd want to see it...sort of as a horror/comedy hybrid...like it should be scary but amusing...but i do think they tried for that a bit...i just remember thinking the trailer ended up making it seem a little bit slower and more drama-like in a weird way.

and i agree...that cloverfield movie definitely looks pretty cool in my opinion...i wasn't a big fan of the blair witch project...but i think the concept of making it feel a little gritty and real and connected to camcorders...(which when faced with a giant monster attacking new york city is more than likely going to happen...just think "is godzirra!") is pretty promising for some real suspense.
the problem with the blair witch project was you were supposed to be scared of piles of rocks and stick dolls.
i just don't want them to then copy this idea to death until we're sick of it. and unfortunately that goes for me as well as i believe i might've mentioned to tom that i'd considered something along those lines for my little slasher.

yeah it'll be neat to see how they do a 200 foot tall monster from a camcorder perspective. It might turn out looking quite cheesy. Hopefully they are able to keep that suspense going that grabs you throughout the trailer.

yeah...personally i'm hoping for something along the lines of never really fully showing it in all of it's CGI glory...kinda like how people say signs was scary until the end...so if they do it right it will just be thru the power of suggestion...see it's eyes or teeth or snatchy little flipper-thingies (only don't call them flipper-thingies cuz then people will just think of that dolphin who liked to save people...and if they really want to get obscure they're going to think of the movie of the same name starring elijah wood)...and that's not really scary at all.
and then, b/c i'm sure it'd still be possible to capture the beast from far enough away in it's entirety, it should still be silhoutted by the moonlight...or slinking between buildings and stuff...although it might be cool to see it tearing through times square...perhaps that's a bit cliched though.

it is cool though because i've never seen this image...just read a description...nothing i remembered colored it quite so whale-like...but i do see they drew pictures of those little crazy crab/lice creatures and i did read those things are like it's babies or clinging to it and pretty large themselves and scary enough as it is.

yeah it could be cool if they started out with those smaller parasites, which i agree are scary enough themselves... then once you see the main monster it makes them look like house pets.
