www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwT8GyLxIhkright now it's just a shitty cellphone version, but i went to the midnight showing of i am legend (that's what it's showing on) and my god...i can not contain my excitement for this movie. i simply will not. judging by this, i would say this trailer alone is now my favorite movie of all time.

Man, I was honestly hoping it was actually about some snowblowers. Been thinking about moving up north, you know.
Joker looks well creepy... this should be good.

I vaguely remember talking about it the other night. Possibly Friday?

They should have made a movie called CloverLEAF... about the mall.
That would have been well scary.

Yeah, I'm definitely game Matt. I won't be able to make it until after I get off work at 8 though but I think some of my friends from the theater were talking about seeing it that night too. So I went by and asked what times the movie was showing after 8 and they said 9:20 and 10:10. If you think you can make it let me know and hopefully I'll meet you up there. Probably want to get tickets kinda early though because I've got a feeling it's going to be pretty packed.

sorry...yeah thought i'd said which theater in the post...those times are actually for commonwealth (cuz i thought that's where you were talking about seeing it the other night at alan's)...but yeah getting tickets online is one way (i think they operate thru movietickets.com instead of fandango...and i'm not sure about surcharges but i know fandango usually charged an extra buck per ticket or something like that?) or you could get up there early and pick up tickets and then find something to do for two hours or whatever...in the past i've gone up to barnes and noble to chill beforehand...and then there's also the option that i can buy your ticket(s) and you can pay me back which is probably the easiest way but also leaves me waiting outside until you get there which could leave us sitting in the very front row and i don't know about you, but i really can't stand sitting anywhere that isn't elevated in that theater...i saw panic room way up front and it was awful (the experience. not the movie.)
but i guess if i know how many other people are coming up from chester (like possibly coop? thought he was talking about it too...or anyone else) i can probably get my theatre friends to hold our seats until you get up there?
just let me know.

Anyone else see Juno? I think I'm the only person I know that didn't go apeshit over this movie. It's pretentious, it insists upon itself and while you can tell it thinks it's clever, it never comes close to actually being so. The dialog was unnatural, like it was written specifically to be quoted by college kids at parties. It tries so hard to be cute it makes me want to throw up into an empty case of Icehouse. Eagle vs. Shark was the movie Juno wanted to be. Check that out if you get a chance. Sorry about the rant, I'm just confused as to why everyone loves this movie so much.
Am I uncool to prefer seeing a 200 foot monster thrash New York like Rosie O'Donnell let loose in a Outback Steakhouse?

you know...i was actually going to recommend this one (juno) too...i mean...it's not for everyone to be certain and i think the complaint about the dialogue (tom...any idea why i'm getting a red underscore for that? even on dictionary.com and yet even they spell it that way???) being spot on is valid and yet that didn't really bother me...
it's funny though that you didn't like it because i found myself comparing it to two other movies...little miss sunshine (which i liked) and napoleon dynamite (and this is one where i sort of ended up feeling the same way you did about juno with this one...it's sort of plotless, pointless, and ends up amounting to a bunch of quirky quotes but no substance)
however, i also think i prefer cooler than real, witty dialogue over the alternative which is something akin to the blair witch project, where it's all improv. and not robin williams/jim carrey/judd apatow style improv but the kind that would occur when a camera was pointed at any of us spontaneously...for example:
MATT Hey. How's it going?
STEPHEN Not Much.
MATT Cool.
STEPHEN Cool.
To me that's more realistic...and perhaps a bit extreme, but it's also boring as all get out. But it's definitely a fine line and I'm hoping Cloverfield is able to make a scripted movie feel like it's natural.
i went to see it with my brother to juno and he wasn't really crazy about it either...i think the problem is potentially that it was overhyped a bit personally...not to say i think it was the best m ovie of the year...i think right now i'm leaning towards ratatouille for my pick...but i definitely enjoyed it...sorry to hear you didn't though.
i also thought ellen page actually did a pretty amazing job actually. so i might say she deserves the oscar this year for best actress. her, or amy adams for enchanted. which seems a bit silly, but she really does make you believe she's a disney princess come to life in this cold, hard world.

Yo!
I saw Cloverfield. I didn't think this was any good. What is Cloverfield? Was that the monsters name?I would have called him Dexter.
But really, I thought the movie had no character development at all.. Really didn't care about who died and who didnt. And I know suspension of disbelief and all that, but why was this dude carrying the camera everywhere with him when his life was on the line?
I am also kind of getting tired of these movies where everyone dies in the end. How about a happy ending for once!!! But seriously, a darker ending can be provocative if done correctly, like No Country For Old Dudes, but often, it just seems like they kill the characters off because they dont know what else to do with them. That seemed like the deal here: just kill the characters because that was the easiest way to end it.

hmmmm...sorry to hear you didn't like it...i thought it was pretty good actually...i'm not sure what sort of expectations you went in with though...sometimes that can affect the overall enjoyment...a lot of the time actually...
i think the name cloverfield was chosen just because of that whole "what is cloverfield?" comment. initially it was just a secret title they were using. kind of like a placeholder title. i'm guessing you never saw transformers on the big screen (or probably ever...and i'm not saying that was a bad or good move...it was...decent) but the trailer for cloverfield premiered without any title...just the release date...if that, even...it was just some really smart marketing, i guess...b/c it created a sort of "what was that one preview...that looked pretty cool...was it even a preview? i assume it was...but what was it called? it didn't even give a title...isn't that a little unusual?" and thus...on the second day, hype was born, and all was good.
so...first question...sort of answered...also...i think it could work just as that...a codename. like what the military called it or something. cloverfield is actually a street in LA from what i understand...granted this was in NYC...but it could be like referring to area 51 and roswell. something like that.
second part. i can see your point on character development, but i think this is partly because of the nature of the movie. trying to show it from the perspective of people like us. i think it also has to do partly with the type of movie it is: a monster movie. it's not no country for old people because it's not trying to be, you know? but i think we got enough to know about the characters...most of them anyway...if there was anyone i felt was really not developed at all it was the black chick...and i think this is best illustrated by the fact that i'm referring to her as the black chick...also...the jason character, the brother. but then again he got killed pretty early.
i think we got a decent feel for Hud (the cameraman) and for Rob and Beth and their relationship. And even for the other girl, Marleen, and her interactions with Hud. I think if we'd had a lot of talking about who they were, etc. it would've been less realistic like it was being forced so we knew who these characters were, when really she's met most of these people for the first time here.
I think the whole point of this character rant is best defended in the fact that we're sort of supposed to be taken for the ride, you know? it's not necessarily about watching a movie so much as experiencing it a bit? and that's why i liked it. because i felt like i got to watch a big fucking monster tear new york a new one and it was INTENSE. not so much b/c i was worried or not about the other people around me, but because i felt like i was there with them. part of their search and rescue party. and i think they did a pretty decent job of making it seem believable of why he'd be filming things...as one review put it...it's just this modern age really...you're telling me people didn't sit there with their camera phones or camcorders and film 9-11 completely oblivious of the danger they were in, or even in spite of it?
don't know what to say about the no happy endings for alaskan dude. i mean, it's been that way for decades. but i don't know that i've seen a lot where everybody died...no country for old men, the departed...i'm drawing a blank already though...i'm sure there's others...and maybe it's not just about everyone dying so much as it being about the bleak endings...maybe it's just the times we live in...i do think some movies do it just to try to make their movie "deep" and maybe that's part of why you didn't like it hear...but again, i saw (esp. through the old couple-y footage/flashbacks) a normal guy who put himself in danger again and again to try to save the girl he loved, and then in their last breath, and only in their last breath, they were able to tell each other how they really felt. i'm not saying it brought me to tears or pretending it's anything new or completely original...but i think it was done well.
i could've seen people surviving, but then i think that moment is lost. i think the point of the movie was "don't be afraid to tell the ones you love how you really feel, because a giant monster might come and kill you both before you can."
that is all.

Yeah this basically the argument I had with David Coopsdale over this flick. He was saying it bothered him that there was no explanation or closure regarding the monster. I can see where people would be frustrated with this, because with 99% of other movies, everything usually gets tied up pretty neatly. Motives or reasons are always apparent. But with Cloverfield I felt that by keeping you in the dark about this, it enhanced the first-person experience. Okay, so maybe they could have had some sort of epilogue after the tape cut out, but I'm assuming maybe they want to make a sequel? Is this a good idea? Who knows. We still need to see how huge the monster's dung would be. Maybe that's what he was doing in Central Park at the end?

It doesn't really bother me that i didn't get any explanation over the monster really. In some ways its almost better when movies dont try to explain these things. If they try to explain it, then we start to try and think about it as an audience, and it usually doesnt make much sense. Besides, what could they possibly give as an explanation that 1) hasnt been done before or 2) is remotely logical anyways. What would they say, that the monster was mutated from a common rat because of toxic goo? I heard that before in NINJA TURTLES!!!!!
I'm just not sure I was ever really sure why they were risking life and limb to go right where this monster is to save some girl that the brother just had a one night stand with and now thinks he loves, esp. when she might be dead anyways.
And I didn't really feel like it was all that intense either. Signs or something like that, now that was intense. This I felt like there were plenty of times were just nothing was happening, even in the middle of the movie.
Oh, and I would like an explanation for why that girl exploded! Or why the army, once they found them covered in blood in Macy's Department store, didn't immediately ask, "Has anyone been bitten?" since they knew what was going to happen.

Yeah that exploding girl bit was weird. Maybe they should have asked her if she ate Chipolte for dinner, ha!!
